Land Acknowledgement

10/30/2023 8:30 AM
Online conferences and virtual events provide a unique opportunity for land acknowledgements. Because this conference happens in many locations simultaneously it gives all participants an opportunity to reflect on the location they are joining from. As Dr. Robert Warner shares in his email communications, "I acknowledge that I live, work, and recreate on the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes." Kim Brosnan, ACA's Director of Knowledge Systems, invites our participants to begin the Staffing Summit with this consideration "As we gather in this virtual space, we recognize that we are connected with one another through the winds that blow air into our lungs and through the waters that move deep into the earth and up into the sky. We acknowledge that the ground beneath our feet is historically the home of Indigenous Peoples, many of whom have been forced to leave for other lands."

Evolving Our Approaches: Finding & Cultivating the "Yes" to New Ways of Work

10/30/2023 1:10 PM
Navigating how and where to make changes in your operations to meet the needs of your workforce (or potential workforce) is one of the most complex challenges facing leaders today. The top down approach in management doesn’t meet with the needs and wants of the workforce, requiring leaders to be agile, open, and willing to change. Through examples of successes and failures, we’ll explore how shifting our approaches to decision making and implementing a few new skills can open leaders up to creative solutions that meet their needs, rather than seeing them as impossible - leading to both increased doers at your organization and less stress on you!

The Value of Discomfort: Creating a Learning Environment During Training

10/30/2023 3:30 PM
Camp is a fast paced and mentally difficult environment for many of the staff we work with. With mental health becoming more accepted and less taboo, staff are rightfully feeling empowered to let us know when topics might make them feel mentally unsafe. Sometimes this is being confused with feeling uncomfortable and staff missing out on key skill building to support the campers we serve. Discomfort is an important part of the learning and growing process and we don’t want staff to miss out on learning opportunities to build their skills and mental resiliency while ultimately being better able to support the campers we serve. In this session, the difference between unsafe and uncomfortable will be defined and discussed with a focus on how discomfort is a key part of the learning process. Strategies will be given to help staff prepare and be more open to discomfort as well as identifying if they are unsafe or uncomfortable from the pre-interview process to training to during the summer. We will have an overall goal of you being able to empower staff you work with to feel comfortable in

General Keynote Session: Dr. Jamye Hardy-Wille

10/31/2023 11:50 AM
Keynote: Where’s Their Head At: The Mindset and Mental Health of our Newest Staff Generation The next generation of camp staff have a unique life experience that has shaped their worldview and how they navigate through it. They push the boundaries of the status quo with an evolved approach to work and communication, leaving some of us just as perplexed as we were over twenty years ago with the music video that accompanies the hit song toward which the title of this keynote nods. Acknowledging that mindset and mental health have both risk management and retention implications that can impact broader operations and other staff, we are responsible for leaning in and better understanding Gen Z. This session will provide a 10,000 foot view of the context in which Gen Z was influenced and current trends of their generation that impact work. We will borrow from trauma-informed approaches and student development theories to help frame this insight. The goal is to foster a shift in perspective from “what is wrong with them” to “what happened and what is happening to them” in order to create space for understanding and connection, and thus, a better camp for all.

Jamye Hardy-Wille, EdD

Jamye Hardy-Willie

Dr. Jamye Hardy-Wille offers an approach to leadership development that is grounded in her passion to help people and organizations grow to be their best by incorporating wellbeing and play into applicable learning outcomes for audiences. She is a Licensed Master Social Worker, a Doctor of Education in Leading Learning Organizations and Strategic Change, former faculty, and current higher education administrator in Student Care. A native of Nashville, TN, Jamye lectures and facilitates dialogue from her unique experience of life, leadership, and volunteerism, as well as improv and stand-up comedy. Dr. Hardy-Wille deeply values the arts, culture, and education, and currently serves on the Board of Directors at W.O. Smith Music School, the Board of Directors for Unscripted Improv, and the Advisory Board for Promise Land Heritage Association, and the Alumni Board for University School of Nashville.

Dr. Hardy-Wille is passionate about highlighting the connections between mental health and success, and primarily facilitates dialogue and consults with leaders on elevating purpose, identifying accountability and tools, the value of a wholistic approach to wellbeing, and mindset development. Her approach to practice is grounded in the strengths perspective, positive psychology, growth mindset, and the value of play.

Dr. Hardy-Wille's first job in high school was that of a camp counselor after a childhood of summers full of Girl Scout, music, sports, cultural, and academic camps, and attributes much of her creative approach to team building leader development to the foundation that those experience developed. Equally important to Jamye as her service to others is her love sports, arts, travel, and spending time with her husband and pit-ridgeback rescue, Nala.

From Seasonal Spark to Full-Time Flame: Creating an EPIC Curriculum to Foster Future Camp Leaders

10/31/2023 1:10 PM
The next generation of camping professionals are at your camps right now! (OK maybe not RIGHT now since it's October...) We've all had those staff members that we wish we could keep on staff year-round or whose infectious energy needs to be shared with the greater camping community. You might suggest that they look into transitioning into a full-time role at camp, but doing so comes with a VERY steep learning curve... Join Jason Brown as he shares tackling this problem within his organization, and what led to him developing an 8-week EPIC training curriculum aimed at creating the next generation of Emerging Professionals in Camping. Learn what worked and what didn't, what skills were taught, and how you can institute this same training at your own camp.

Magical camp experiences are not possible if the most basic needs of campers and staff are not met...and yet the people responsible for providing our food, shelter and supporting necessary functions at camp are often excluded from trainings about 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion. Our Legal Obligations to Staff Under the Americans with Disabilities Act

10/31/2023 1:10 PM
Most camp professionals know that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires camps to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified applicants and employees with disabilities. But what exactly does this mean? What is a reasonable accommodation? Which employees are protected? What does the ADA actually require us to do? This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the ADA so that participants walk away knowing exactly what the ADA requires of them, what protections it offers to employees, and how to approach ADA questions. We’ll examine case studies volunteered by participants to consider how the ADA applies to real-world scenarios in the camp industry. The session will also include plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

“Return-to-Work Syndrome” has been a phenomenon of employed individuals for decades. You might have heard its most recent viral nickname: “The Sunday Scaries.” And, yes, as with many things, our GenZ staff experience this aspect of their work life more intensely, going so far as to express a feeling of “existential dread” when describing the day they go back to work after a break. (Yep, srsly.) While it’s normal for staff to want to make the most of their limited downtime, we also need them to return to camp with their staff hats firmly back on, having accomplished both their desire to blow off steam and their need to relax/rejuvenate. In this session we will discuss the psychology behind the “back-to-work blues” and how we can help staff mitigate the anxiety, use their time off effectively, and return to work ready to be awesome. And don’t let the term “Sunday Scaries” lead you astray: this content is explicitly applicable to both day and overnight camp staff, no matter which day of the week they return from time off!

Addressing Harmful Camper Behaviors Directed at 2SLGBTQIA+ Staff

10/31/2023 2:20 PM
We know the topic of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion has been escalated to a fever pitch as states across the country have politicized the safe existence of queer and trans* people - and in many camps this has resulted in campers sometimes feeling empowered to exhibit harmful words and behaviors, both towards youth in the community and sometimes adults. In this session we will unpack the nuanced relationship between campers, privilege, harm, and safety as it pertains to keeping 2SLGBTQIA+ staff members emotionally and physically safe(r) while employed at our camps.

Engaging Personal Professional Development: Skills for Incorporating Mental Health Awareness

10/31/2023 2:20 PM
Personal wellbeing has always impacted professional output; we’re just more honest about it now that we have collectively experienced a pandemic that made this fact abundantly evident. For our new generation of camp counselors, the stigma around engaging mental health is drastically lower than in generations before and many acknowledge mental health as a normal part of life to discuss. But for those who did not grow up with this experience, the emerging expectation to engage with what was “taboo”, let alone in a workplace, can leave otherwise experienced and knowledgeable camp leaders feeling ill-equipped. Nevertheless, you care to prepare the next generation of camp leadership and your role requires you to engage in developmental conversations that may be related to a staff member’s experience on the mental health continuum. This session will advance the day’s keynote and offer practical skills for identifying warning signs of mental health concerns and expanding traditional professional development conversations with staff to be inclusive of mental health considerations.

Late to the Party: Ideas for Onboarding Late Hired Staff

10/31/2023 2:20 PM
The reality of hiring for the summer is that we need to hire staff up to, during, and after staff training. We all know that we need to train our staff regardless of when they start, but how we execute those trainings can lead to other concerns and frustrations. This session will look at ways that you can intentionally plan or modify your staff training to meet late hired staff needs, blend with current staff, and intentionally strategize how to train throughout the summer to review, remind, or retrain staff. Even if they are late to the camp party, late hired staff can still have a good time and make a difference!
